From Belly to Baby...

Spring is finally here! Wedding season starts next month and I am ready. Big equipment upgrades in my off season, and I made time for some personal growth too. I had the good fortune of spending this past weekend shooting with David E. Jackson up in Appleton. If you aren't familiar with Dave's work, do yourself a big favor and check him out. Amazing really doesn't begin to cover it. If you're a photog and looking to up your game, check out his Breaking The Rules workshops. I'd easily have spent 3 times his fee to learn what I did this weekend. These images are just a few I captured at the workshop. Thanks again for everything, Dave.

I had so much fun photographing Rachel & Justin's wedding, they are an adorable couple. First of all, I LOVE a bride who builds enough time into her day to allow for great portraits!

A great "getting ready shot" is always one of my favorites. I love Rachel is taking in the moment as her girls buzz around her.

Such beautiful ladies! I loved the colors at this wedding.

We had time to stop at a beach to get some shots, and the sun was giving me some gorgeous backlight.

A beautiful day for sure... here's to many years of happiness!

I have so many gorgeous images from Brooke and James' wedding. First though, we happened to run into AJ Hawk at the reception site... he was very gracious and took a photo with the bride.

Spring is coming soon, and I'm ready! After a 4 month break, I'm ready to get back in the saddle. My NEW website will be going live within the next few days, and I'm excited to share it with all of you. My plans were to get it up much sooner, but I took a bad tumble several weeks ago and have spent much of my time recovering. All is well now, thankfully.

Cassie's Senior Session!

At last, a long-awaited preview from my session with Cassie! She is such a fun girl, and I love her smile. She patiently waited as we dodged clouds and raindrops, and in the end we got some great images. These photos were taken at Lawsonia in Green Lake.

How cool is this tree? Once we noticed the little heart in the branches, we had to catch this shot!

Every so often, I take a wacky shot like this and just go with it. I love how part of the photo is totally blown out, with the streams of sunlight bursting through.

Interpretations

One of the most enjoyable components of the photography process for me comes long after the shutter goes *click.* Post-processing is what makes a good photo amazing, and when I get excited about an image I can spend quite a while interpreting it different ways. You'll see a full preview of Sam's session soon (and Cassie's, too!) but I've been wanting to do a post like this for a while. Take the above image, one of my favorites from Sam's session. It's edited in a more traditional way (for me). But I wanted to place more emphasis on the eyes, and make the color pop just a bit more... to add to the drama of the photo.

This really amps it up a bit. I placed more emphasis on her amazing eyes by popping the color and further blurring out everything but her face. That also creates more movement in the background -- which happens to be a shimmery shirt Sam was wearing.

I had a feeling that the image would also be great in black and white, and I was right. Even though you don't see the color, the subtleties of black and white really bring out the "fire" in her eyes, and also the highlights of her hair. Often I spend more time editing a black and white photo, because I know certain elements pop more in this medium. In this case, I added the extra light to her eyes and painted in highlights to make them more prominent. I kept the extra blur-out from the last photo, so even though Sam was sitting perfectly still there's a sense of movement to the shot.

So that's a small bit of insight as to what goes on in my crazy head when I'm editing. As always, click to see more detail!

Wedding: Lindsay and Joe

Oh, what a treat it was to photograph Lindsay and Joe's wedding this past weekend. Not only was Lindsay's dress to die for, but the emotion and love between these two was absolutely palpable all day. I love catching little candid moments that express the joy & excitement of such a special occasion, and Lindsay and Joe made my job very easy. Wedding: Amy + Sean

My beautiful sister Amy was married September 14, and I had the great joy of photographing her big day. While the remnants of Hurricane Ike rained on our parade and greatly limited the outdoor shots, nothing could put a damper on this celebration!

Quick Etsy Shout-Out

I have been in search of a longer camera strap for a while. The one that came with my camera annoyed me to the point that I never used a strap at all, which isn't an awesome idea when you're lying on the ground, trying to "get the shot." But I wanted something with a little style, and when a friend won an Etsy contest for a new strap, I knew I'd found my answer. Last week I ordered this strap and I love it! So I thought I would share her store as well as my overall love for Etsy. You can find a talented artist creating just about anything on this site. Beware however, it's addictive! I now have little Etsy treasures all over my house.

I guess it takes a few days for it to permanently redirect to the correct site. If you aren't getting through, please go to www.michellemartinphotography.zenfolio.com/

This will be the place that I upload a client's session when it's finished. The nice thing about this site is the ability to password protect galleries at a client's request. Eventually, online ordering will be available as well! I really like the straightforward set up. Once you're in a gallery, you can click on the photo a second time to fill the screen and can scroll through that way... giving you the ability to really see your images clearly online. Check it out!

A Studio Preview!

How cute is this little guy? I had the chance to snap some shots last week while using a friend's studio. He was such a happy boy. I love doing sessions with this age (6 months) because they are so expressive and yet not too mobile yet.

I do have access to a studio with enough notice, so if you're interested in booking time please let me know! This was such a great moment. He had just fallen asleep, and I caught his sweet little dreamy smile. Sigh.Blowing raspberries!

Busy Busy

Sorry for the lack of posts of late, I have a couple of sessions in the next week, but my main focus is the Columbus Carriage Classic coming up August 22-24. I'm the banquet coordinator for the weekend. This is a wonderful community activity, one that was rescheduled after the terrible floods in June. It's a FREE event, the price listed on the website is for the banquet on Friday night, not admission to the festival. Come out and support this unique, beautiful event!

F & M Bank's Ledger Books

As promised, here are some photos of the ledger books in the back room of F&M bank. It's amazing to thumb through the pages and see the perfect script which documented every transaction. How we take for granted the ability to quickly type something in and reproduce it infinitely! This is much more interesting to see, though. I also love the old labels on the inner cover of each book. I wonder if any of these companies are still in business?

Farmers & Merchants Bank -- Columbus

It's not every day that you get to photograph a structure built by the teacher of Frank Lloyd Wright, the father of the skyscraper... Louis Sullivan! Many people may not realize what an architecural treasure we have right here in Columbus, but Farmers and Merchants Bank downtown is living history in our midst. Looking at the ledger books in the back room was amazing, I'll post more photos from that soon. Years and years of history handwritten in beautiful script, it's really incredible to see. Here are a few shots, I can only hope I did this lovely building justice. Click for more detail.

This was the original safe. John (the bank Vice President) opened it for me and it was surprisingly small! As he pointed out though, it didn't take much room to hold a LOT of gold.

My Hometown: A New, Ongoing Photoseries

This week I am completing a series of photos taken for the new Columbus walking tour booklet. Hopefully, the booklet will be complete in time for the Carriage Classic, the weekend of August 22-24. Rod Melotte has been working on the project as well -- he documented many historic homes around the community, and I tackled the downtown. The project by itself was rather straightforward; take head-on shots of the facades of the assigned buildings, no fancy angles necessary. Yet, in the process I kept seeing little details I wanted to capture. I noticed signs I never paid much attention to. (If you've seen my Public Enemies photos, you know I'm a sucker for an interesting sign.) So, I've been inspired to begin my own Columbus-area photoseries. No telling how often I'll post new photos, but keep an eye out for Columbus, through my lens!

Adoption -- The Greatest Gift of My Life

Three years ago next week, we received the phone call that changed our lives and our family forever. Seeing my girl's face for the first time was a feeling so incredible that I can't accurately describe it. Anyone who has met Julia knows that she radiates joy... what you see in pictures is only a hint of it! She has the most open heart, and is the greatest gift of my life.

Taking a picture of her holding her referral photo is a tradition I started on our first anniversary. Here are the photos from the last two years:

Which brings me to the "photography" related aspect of this post. Normally, I offer $25 off the regular session fee for all adoptive families. New Senior Portrait Session Preview

This past Monday, I met Megan and her family for an afternoon session at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison. The weather was warm and the mosquitos were crazy, but Megan was a trooper and we captured many lovely images. So many that I'm having a hard time narrowing it down! This fountain view is my personal favorite at the moment, but it keeps changing!

I love photos like this, with simple natural elements in the background. When blurred out (that's called bokeh) they become like a watercolor. Which satisfies my angst about being born with zero painting ability. Heh. Click on the image to see what I mean...

I like throwing in some shots that are edited a little unexpectedly. Of course any image can be interpreted many different ways, but this one lends itself well to that dreamy, soft vibe.

I had an awesome senior portrait session tonight in the Bascom Hall area on campus in Madison. Amazing light and an easy-going subject. Aaron is just cool. This is an admirable trait to me because I was sooo not cool in high school. Ha. Don't you wish you could be this cool?

I can't tell you how happy this makes me. The lovely Commodore Minxie emailed to ask me if she could print out a photo I took (pictured above) for Johnny Depp to sign on the last day of Public Enemies filming in Los Angeles. Of course I agreed, and the link above is a pic of Johnny signing my photo! She gave him a copy of the photo as well. Who knows if he even keeps those things, but it makes me happy anyway.

My First Ad

Recently, Kim Bates at the West James Gallery contacted me about taking photos for an ad that is appearing in Amtrak's Empire Builder Magazine. Forgive the quality of the image, I converted it from pdf to jpg and it suffered a bit for it.

Thanks for the opportunity, Kim! I'm excited to play this part in the promotion of our fine city. By the way, the link at the bottom of the ad (since you might not be able to see it) is for the Columbus Visitor Center.

Columbus Auditorium

One of my big passions in life is historic preservation. Growing up in the Detroit area, I saw many gorgeous, history-filled buildings crumble that could have been saved. When I moved to Columbus seven years ago, I discovered a treasure of architecture and fell in love with the history. During the Carriage Classic one year, I stumbled upon the auditorium during a rare open house tour. I fell in love with it instantly, and hoped there was a way it could be saved. Recently, there has been more forward movement on renovating this time capsule of our city, and I had the pleasure of photographing it. I had a great opportunity to photograph the lovely K & D in Chicago last month. Sadly, the weather was wholly uncooperative for our Navy Pier excursion, but they were troopers and we took shots back at their hotel as well. Here are just a few of my favorites.

Well, I'm off and running with my new venture -- Michelle Martin Photography. For the time being this is the place to look for new stuff, though I'll keep my Flickr active as well. Thanks to the whirlwind of the Public Enemies filming, many people have seen my work and given me much appreciated feedback! It's been a lot of fun to meet so many new people and hone my photography skills.
